oil paintings and portrait drawings

Karen King is an artist based in Newton, IA. Her family introduced her to art as a very young child, captivating her ever since.

Karen is an innovative painter who works with water-soluble oils, best known for her water spray approach to manipulate the oil to create her paintings.  For each painting, Karen focuses on the design and arrangement of dark and light, the harmonious union of line, form and color.

Karen fell in love with portrait drawing when my children were young.   She developed her own techniques and tricks along the way.  Karen strives to produce realistic looking drawings and add her own conceptual ideas too.  She often get asked if she ever took any art classes. The answer is, no, she is completely self taught.

Her artwork can be found in numerous private and corporate collections all around the US and in other countries

Instructor and Studio Artist Karen King inspires guests of all ages to explore their creativity from beginner to professional level. Large group, semi-private, and private lesson opportunities are available through her leadership in a comfortable relaxed environment.   She teaches painting and drawing out of her home, as well as conducting workshops at the Centre for Arts and Artists on drawing, sculpture, pottery and fused glass.

As a part of Centre for Arts and Artists' outreach, Karen has provided over 4 years of art based activities to the Basic and Beyond students where she is employed. Through her volunteerism, B. & B. students have created photography, wall hangings, pottery, paintings, and art of repurposed materials. Although there is no art in the B. & B. curriculum, Centre for Arts and Artists has provided materials. The implementation of the art opportunities at the school have been through Karen's efforts. CAA has since welcomed those students to continue their creativity at the Centre.  This year Karen won the “Above and Beyond” award from the NCEF given to one Newton school employee each year.

Karen encourages all to come for a tour of the Centre for Arts and Artists. Please check the calendar of events on the Face Book page and also at the website.
